I had an interesting conversation with my little sister last night about how her high school counselor (The same one I had ten years ago) gives her a very hard time since her three older sisters never went to college. This said counselor claims that she really must "make something of herself," and go to college so that her life is not a waste. Even though frustrated by what her counselor claims, my adorable sister has been researching what she wants to do at different colleges. And so far, what she has found reminds me of the same search I went through at that time of my life. She said a cute thing referring to one possible path she might take and the price of culinary school... "I don't have to go to school for it, I can just make cakes!!"

Thinking back on those same emotions produced in my heart my senior year makes my blood heat up. Just because what I wanted to do doesn't fit in the box of "college" doesn't mean it's wrong. And it's not that I didn't want to go to college, I just didn't want to do most of the things at colleges! I was an excellent student throughout school and really impressed most of my teachers, but I have never had dreams to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant, or physicist. I have however had the dream to...

... create beauty and inspiration with my hands
... live vibrantly and attract others to what I live for
... provide awesome food to my husband and everyone else
... create a home and family where people can feel loved
... live my life with a feeling of purpose

Mr. Counselor,
Right now I am a waitress. And not only that, I live in the same town I grew up in. I don't have a degree, I have never taken any accredited college credits, and I got married at an age that was way too early to responsibly decide what kind of adult I wanted to be. (According to you, that is.)
Mr. Counselor, the dreams I had in my heart during high school probably seem simple to you, but they're the same that I have today. And if I had gone off and gotten a degree to make you and the current world happy, I may not be doing what I have always dreamed of doing...

... creating beauty and inspiration with my hands
... living vibrantly and attracting others to what I live for
... providing awesome food to my husband and everyone else
... creating a home and family where people can feel loved
... living my life with a feeling of purpose

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
~Romans 12:6-8

I agree with you completely! Besides college only made things harder for Steve and I, I'm glad I went because I got to meet Steve, but I so could do without the student loans. And Marissa is right, if she wants to make cakes she doesn't need a degree! Just like I don't need a degree to make movies. College is overrated. Student loans are stupid and pointless. Where is the logic in getting yourself into debt to get a better paying job...that better paying job is just going to pay on your debt. Dumb. You and John are doing so great! And so are Amber and Christel! Clearly the counselor is an idiot.

Whoop Whoop!!!! You go girl!!! I know exactly how you feel...instead of a counselor breathing down the neck, it's Dave's family that really pushes the college thing. I don't diss college at all. I LOVED school. I LOVE to learn. And that's it right there. If you have gumption, can read, then you can learn. I joke around and tell people I got my photography degree from Google University. Dave is only a couple classes away from his Bachelors...and he has two Associates...but I think it's interesting how, even though he has all that education, it doesn't mean that he is making more income than me. I feel kind of bad about it actually, but it's just proof that if you have a dream and an entrepreneurial spirit about ya, you can do ANYTHING!!! Without an expensive piece of paper that some dean hands you...I'm proof of that. Never went to college...don't have a degree...but own my own successful business. You guys can and WILL do the same thing! I'm SO excited for you!!! And to know what Missy is wanting to do is SO flippin' exciting!!! Oh...and everything our hands touch prosper right? (Deut. 30:9) Because we are CHILDREN OF GOD!!!! Your counselor has NO clue the prosperity and the favor upon your life because God is your Daddy. I just pray for this person that he/she sees the blessing and favor in all of you girl's lives and then God would be glorified...so we can get this person on the God path and off the College track :) Love ya girl!!!

Amen sister......I have a really expensive degree that collects dust in my house that I get to stay home and clean all the time. Thing is God sent me to college to find the man he had for me and get my Mrs. degree. I would never take back my college years....but God's plans and ways are different for each of us. We just gotta be obedient to that and were good! And I feel ya with the serving thing.....did that for 9 years!
